The BRIEF™ consists of two rating forms—a parent questionnaire and a teacher questionnaire—designed to assess executive functioning in the home and school environments. It is used to evaluate children with a wide spectrum of developmental and acquired neurological conditions, such as:

Product Description

Each BRIEF questionnaire contains 86 items in eight non-overlapping clinical scales and two validity scales. The validity scales measure Negativity and Inconsistency of responses.

These theoretically and statistically derived scales form two broader Indexes: Behavioural Regulation (three scales) and Metacognition (five scales), as well as a Global Executive Composite score. Factor analytic studies and structural equation modeling provide support for the two-factor model of executive functioning as encompassed by the two Indexes.

Software option

The Brief-SP provides unlimited scoring and report generation for the BRIEF® Parent Form, the BRIEF Teacher Form, the BRIEF®-SR, and now the BRIEF®-P. After administration of one or any combination of these four protocols, item responses or scale raw scores are hand-entered into a new or an existing client file. The software scores the protocol(s) and generates the selected report(s): a comprehensive Interpretive Report for the clinician; a Feedback Report that can be used to provide a summary of results to parents, teachers, care providers, and/or the individual him or herself; and/or a Protocol Summary Report that allows for comparison of up to four different administrations of either the BRIEF, BRIEF-SR or BRIEF-P. 

The BRIEF-SP Interpretive Report includes T-scores and percentiles based on separate normative tables for four developmental age groups of children ages 5-18 years (for the BRIEF) by gender, for four developmental age groups of adolescents ages 11-18 (for the BRIEF-SR) years by gender, and for preschool-aged children (2-5.11 years) by age and gender. The optional intervention recommendations for the BRIEF and the BRIEF-SR include more than 140 suggestions for modifications and supports organised by area of executive difficulty and environment (e.g. educational, rehabilitative, therapeutic) for child and youth-centred intervention methods. These recommendations include an optional IEP/504 section that offers possible goals and objectives for school-based programmes. The BRIEF Interpretive Report also offers an optional ADHD diagnostic classification section based on the youth's Working Memory and Inhibit scale scores. For the BRIEF-P, more than 100 support and intervention recommendations are suggested based on noted executive function difficulties.

The BRIEF-SP Feedback Report provides a basic overview of the BRIEF, the BRIEF-SR, and/or the BRIEF-P. The BRIEF Feedback Reports (i.e. Parent, Teacher) are written with the youth's parent or teacher in mind, the BRIEF-SR Feedback Report is written with the adolescent who was tested in mind, and the BRIEF-P is written with the child's parents/caregivers, care provider or other family member in mind.

The BRIEF-SP also generates a Protocol Summary Report for the BRIEF, the BRIEF-SR, and the BRIEF-P. The Protocol Summary Report provides tables with score information and a profile for graphing up to four protocols for the same client.

  • All reports can be edited easily onscreen to incorporate additional clinical information and edit interpretive statements.

  • User-friendly system functionality includes program navigational tools, file handling, report editing, Tooltips and data export (for research applications).
