Unconscious bias testing has become increasingly relevant in organisations across the UK, with teams seeking to test for bias in a number of areas including with regards to gender, race, age and sexual orientation. To step up our own efforts in this area, Hogrefe has launched Implicitly '2.0', a fresh take and new platform for our well-known implicit association tool. The new platform offers a host of new features in addition to its modern interface: additional options, easy test management, add-ons such as an e-learning package and a new pricing structure with additional discount options.
Implicitly uses reaction time to measure biases with regard to disability, age, gender, sexual orientation and ethnic origin.
After completing a series of simple sorting tasks involving pictures of different social groups and words, an individual can be assessed for unconscious bias. The words used in the tests have negative or positive associations, and the sorting tasks have to be completed as quickly and accurately as possible. Implicitly measures the fractional differences in time taken to sort the different images and words in different ways, which are are enough to measure the potential for biased behaviour. Each test takes about three minutes to complete and generates a report, which presents a score, compares it with typical outcomes and explains any implications.
An important thing to note is that we all have biases - it's what we do with that knowledge that counts, and how we continue to strive for professional objectivity. Implicit association tests can be valuable in team development contexts, as well as part of organisational audits and development programmes.
