The Primary ColoursÂ® Model of Leadership (Pendleton & Furnham, 2011) is a new paradigm for relating personality to leadership capability. Based on more than 25 years of research and business consulting experience, the model has a rigorous statistical framework and is taught and used at both SaÃ¯d and Harvard business schools. The model itself focuses directly on the compatibility of an individual's personality with specific leadership tasks - tasks that a leader actually has to carry out on a daily basis.
Mapping the NEO personality profile onto the model means that an individual gains an understanding of how their personality impacts on their effectiveness as a leader. It illustrates areas where, temperamentally, they are naturally more likely to succeed, as well as those areas in which support from the team may be required. Similarly, it indicates areas where development programmes are likely to be beneficial, and where such resources could be used more effectively on other personnel.
The report can be used to provide further benefit at the organisational level. It informs how best to construct and leverage the strengths of team members to ensure a successful outcome. It guides the allocation of development resources and programmes to provide the best return on investment.
