A practical guide to the effective use of assessment centre technology - Free Seminars
2009-10-09 12:02:02
This free short seminar is aimed at helping practitioners to use elements of assessment centre technology. There are some clearly laid down standards for assessment centres, but there is also scope for using parts of the range of methods represented by the assessment centre approach. In the seminar we will consider how to tread a path between letting the pursuit of perfection become the enemy of the good versus the unacceptable dilution of assessment centre standards.
Practical constraints on the application of very best practice within each of the areas of assessment centres, from job analysis to multiple competencies and multiple assessors will be explored. Other issues addressed will include the use of criterion-based interviews and standard psychometrics to complement job simulation exercises- the staple fare of assessment centres - and the role of participant report forms in providing further insights into behaviour. We will also look at who should function as assessors. Should they be line managers two levels up from the candidates, as is traditional, or HR staff or external consultants?
The pros and cons of using off-the-shelf versus bespoke job simulation exercises will be examined, together with issues stemming from clients’ emphasis on the credibility of exercise content. The scope for using less commonly employed processes, such as fact-finding exercises and in-basket interviews will be examined. The implications of candidates’ preferences, such as senior level people not wanting to meet other candidates, will be examined.
